In addition to single ring microresonator structures, coupled ring microresonator structures have been fabricated [114]. These amplify the tuning sensitivity factor by the Vernier effect and amplification factors of 40 have been demonstrated. Coupled ring microresonator structures also lead to enhanced side mode suppression. Recently, a novel new architecture for multiple ring microresonators coupled to linear waveguides has been demonstrated [115]. [Pg.1305]

The quantum beat modulation is strongest for tjs = tt/o) and the modulation is completely suppressed for ti3 = Itt/o). Surface trapping processes have to be additionally included in this model. With the decay of the population grating measured as S ti2 = 0, tx3) both Tx and T2 as well as the vibrational damping can be obtained from the mode-suppressed signal [302]. [Pg.548]

Eleven holograms were used to tune the desired modes from the laser. Each mode had a power of-13 dBm with a side-mode suppression of over 30 dB they were spaced 1.3 nm apart, as predicted by the performance of the tuneable filter calculations. The linewidth of the laser proved more difficult to measure, due to the fact that it was extremely narrow. A heterodyne self-beating technique was used with a delay line and a 100.6 MHz frequency shift. The use of a 14.6 km delay line yielded a linewidth of 1.7 kHz assuming a system resolution of... [Pg.839]

As mentioned before, the longitudinal excitation always promotes tunneling, A , =i > A =o- The effect of transversal excitation, however, depends on the behavior of the effective frequency 9 x). For instance, for monotonically growing (decreasing) 9 r) the excitation of the transversal mode suppresses (promotes) the tunneling splitting. We see below that the effective frequency is generally determined as a solution of auxiliary differential equation that describes the nodal structure of the semiclassical wave function. This corresponds to the discussion of Takada and Nakamura [30,31] (see Chapter 4). [Pg.99]

As pointed out in the previous section, all methods of achieving singlemode operation are based on mode suppression by increasing the losses beyond the gain for all but the wanted mode. A possible realization of this idea is illustrated in Fig.6.14, which shows longitudinal mode selection by a... [Pg.286]
