Mixing, Diffusion, and Dialysis Units Detectors

Transfer of solutes from a donor stream, which is separated from the acceptor stream by a permeable membrane, was studied by van der Linden for gases [430] and by Bernhardsson, Martins, and Johansson [852]. 

These parallel-plate devices have identical design for gas diffusion and dialysis, the only difference being the membrane material (Sections 4.6.2 and 4.6.3), and therefore the theory of these two systems has a common feature as far as transport of the analyte from the bulk toward the membrane surface is concerned. 

For gases diffusing through a microporous hydrophobic membrane van der Linden [430] used the tanks-in-series model, by assuming that the groove of the separation unit, having a volume Vr, consists of a series of
