Media Mills. Media mills, also referred to as pearl or bead mills, are much different in operation than a rotor-stator mill. The mill is composed of a milling chamber, milling shaft and product recirculation chamber. The milling shaft extends the... [Pg.214]

The high energy and shear that result from the movement of the milling media is imparted to the particles as the material is circulated through the milling chamber. The result is the ability to create submicron particles. Thermally labile material is easily handled as the milling chamber is jacketed. By utilizing smaller media (less than 100 p,m) nano-sized (20 nm) particles are achievable. [Pg.215]

Wet ball-milling is faster than dry-milling and facilitates the separation of the milling media from the charge. Its disadvantage is that the liquid must be removed, which is most economically achieved by filtration, but any soluble constituent will be removed with the liquid. If this is undesirable the alternative is to evaporate the liquid which can be effected by spray-drying if the liquid is water. Evaporation can also take place in shallow trays in ovens in this case soluble material may appear as a skin on the surface and heavy coarse particles may settle out. [Pg.99]

Contamination by the milling media can be largely avoided by the use of fluid energy mills. In these the powder is entrained in two streams of high-velocity air which are made to impinge on one another so that the particles are broken up by impact. The feedstock must already be ground to within a factor of 10 of the final size required and adjustments are necessary to suit particular materials. [Pg.99]

The formation of metallic pigments takes place in different types of milling equipment. The type of mills, the quantity and size of the milling media, as well as the volume in the mill influence the pigment particle characteristics. In addition, pro-... [Pg.204]

The sand mill is in essence a unit that consists of a water-jacketed cylindrical shell containing disks mounted on a centrally located shaft in the shell and a screen at the top of the mill to allow the base to flow through while retaining the media in the mill (Figure 7). The base is pumped through the mill media by a variable pump. The sand mill can be an open or closed mill. The operation of the sand mill is not complicated detailed instructions are given by the manufacturers. [Pg.1306]
