Micrometer-scale mirrors

Such a compositional complexity is mirrored by the structural complexity of the hybrid network [57]. In typical centric diatoms, the valves consist of an hexagonal array of pores with a lattice constant in the micrometer-scale range, whereas the girdle band exhibits a square array of holes with a lattice constant of a few hundreds of nanometers (Figure 19.4).
