In contrast, in the early twentieth century, Helene Metzger called into question whether a "revolution" could occur which did not measure itself against a preexisting community of opinion and practice. She emphasized the coherence, rather than incoherence, of the pre-Lavoisian state of eighteenth-century chemistry. 6 More recently, Evan Melhado has described chemistry as a well-established eighteenth-century discipline ordered around two clusters of phenomena (wet chemistry and combustion chemistry) and two theoretical motifs...
