Dehydration of 9-hydroxy-10-methyl-cis- and trans-decahydronaphthalenes in H SO -AcOH-AcjO is found to occur without skeletal or methyl group rearrangement. Furthermore, the syn proton at C-1, anti to the C-10 methyl, is selectively removed and indicates that a tight ion-pair is involved in which the departing oxyanion acts as a base in the proton removal. Evidence is adduced that the carbonium ions, of identical energy, interconvert at a rate comparable with the rate of deprotonation (see Scheme 6). [Pg.179]
