Methyl starches

Dimethylxylan, like methylated starch and cellulose, is soluble in cold water and insoluble in hot water. This behavior has been explained as being due to a weakly bonded hydrate which causes solubility at low temperature but which is broken up on heating. [Pg.294]

On the basis of researches devoted to the products of paitial or total hydrolytic breakdown of methylated starch, the chain of a-D-anhydroglucose is thought to constitute the main element of the amylose and amylopectin molecules. These units are combined as in maltose, i.e. by means of a-glucosidic linkages formed between the carbon atoms 1 and 4 ... [Pg.421]

As a result of hydrolysing methylated starch, in addition to the main product, which is 2,3,6-trimethylglucose, a small amount of 2,3,4,6-tetramethylglucose is formed from the end rings. [Pg.421]

Starch acetates are the most easUy prepared of the starch esters. They have served frequently for the characterization of starch fractions, for investigations of starch structure and as intermediates - in the preparation of methylated starch. Although most acetylation work has been done on white potato starch, considerable attention has been given to the acetylation of other starches such as those from com, - - - waxy com, wheat, - - - canna, rice, " horse chestnut and banana. ... [Pg.284]

Peat and Whetstone claimed that the use of acetyl bromide in chloroform for very short reaction-times (6 min.) selectively removes the non-reducing end-group from methylated starch, and proposed the method as a possible one for end-group assay. [Pg.23]

Hydrobromic and hydriodic acid have also been used to hydrolyze starch.20138 Hydrobromic acid seems to be particularly useful in the production of levulinic acid,139 and both acids have been used for demethylation (and depolymerization) of methylated starch.140... [Pg.188]

To test this application of gas-liquid chromatography, the methanolysis products of a number of well-characterized, methylated polysaccharides were examined. Figures 9, 10, and 11 show the chromatograms obtained from the methanolysis products of methylated guar gum, methylated starch, and methylated dextran, respectively. The results, both qualitative and quantitative, were in good agreement with those obtained previously... [Pg.130]
