3 -Methy 1-2-butanone

Treatment of 2 -anilinofluorans with ketones such as acetone or 2-butanone in hydrochloric acid in the presence of iron(III) chloride gives 4,4 -alkylidenebis(A-fluoran-2-ylaniline)s. Thus, 2 -anilino-6 -(A-cyclohexyl-/V-methylainino)-3 -methylfluoran, (86) is treated with acetone in hydrochloric acid in the presence of iron(III) chloride to give 2,2-bis(4-[6 -(N-cy c 1 o hexyl-Ar-methy 1 amino)-3 -methylfluoran-2 -ylamino]phenyl (propane (87)60 (Eq. 9). 

Other furans included methyl- 2-furfural [4], 2-acetylfuran [5], 2-propionylfuran [6], l-(2-furanyl)-2-propanone [7] and l-(-2-furanyl)-3-butanone [8]. Several alkylpyrazines were also found, with the 2,5-dimethyl [9] and 2-methy 1-5-ethyl [10] the most abundant derivatives, and some 2-acyl-l-methylpyrroles of which only the formyl [11] and acetyl [12] derivatives were conclusively identified. 

Percent product distribution 2-methyl-propanal 48.1 1.1, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-butanal 6.9 0.34, l-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-butanone 29.5 0.61, 1,2-dihydroxy-3-methy 1-butane 15.5 1.1. Data evaluation in a manner similar to that for 1-butene showed 24 % of OH addition to occur at the inner and 76 % at the outer position of the double bond, = 0.82 0.02, and 38% reaction of...
