Figure 2 shows the result of an experiment without photocatalyst where the reactor tenperature was maintained at 97°C during the run. Note that conversions of methane remain relatively constant at - 4% and production of hydrogen, methanol, oxygen, and carbon monoxide remain constant during the ejqjeriment. The large oscillations in the conversion of methane and the production of methanol were not observed during this ejqjeriment. 

A strong dependence of the cycle time on the methanol O2 ratio was found in the range of 1.5 to 1.2. During the transition from phase I to phase II the enhancement of the cycle time as a function of the methanol-oxygen ratio does not change, i. e. the cycle time is independent from the transition from an oscillating oxide sample state to a permanently oxidised sample. 

This suggests that, in the case of existence of such oscillations, it is possible control the processes in the reactor so as to maximize the selectivity of methanol formation. This assumption is confirmed by the calculated time evolution of the methanol formation selectivity during an oscillation period (Fig. 8.13) [104]. As can be seen, at some point in time, the...
