As discussed later in this chapter, immunohistochem-ical studies have been used to separate reactive mesothelial hyperplasias from epithelioid mesotheliomas. 

A difficult area in mesothelioma pathology involves differentiating reactive mesothelial hyperplasia from mesothelioma. Table 12.30 contrasts the difference between mesothelial hyperplasia and mesothelioma. Table 12.31 compares the immunohistochemical features of reactive mesothelial hyperplasia versus epithelial mesothelioma. Several publications have evaluated the issue of reactive mesothelial hyperplasia versus mesothelioma.
