The human leukodystrophies are inherited disorders of central nervous system white matter. These disorders are characterized by a diffuse deficiency of myelin caused by a variety of genetic lesions and often manifest before 10 years of age (Table 38-1). Some are caused by mutations in the PLP gene and resemble the PLP animal mutants described in Chapter 4 [ 1,23]. As with the animal models, depending on the nature of the mutation, they vary from a severe form in connatal Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) through an intermediate phenotype in classical PMD to a mild phenotype in spastic paraplegia. It is noteworthy that some mutations of the PLP gene also cause a peripheral neuropathy [24], very probably related to the expression of low levels of PLP in peripheral nerve (see Ch. 4).

The technical prerequisites for following our development are modest. Essentially, introductory quantum mechanics, say, on the level of Merzbacher (1961). Of particular use is familiarity with angular momentum. Otherwise, we have tried to make the book self-contained and tools are developed as needed. Appendices provide important but strictly technical aids. 

We derived (3.54) earlier from our semiclassical treatment, but (3.55) is new information. Quantum electrodynamics (Merzbacher, Chapter 22) confirms the correctness of (3.55). 

Matrices are also a great convenience in the theoretical development of quantum chemistry. They make possible an economy of notation, and use of matrix-algebra theorems simplifies derivations considerably. Much of the quantum chemistry literature is formulated in matrix language. The vector-space formulation of quantum mechanics (which we have just touched on) is very fruitful for advanced applications see Merzbacher, Chapter 14 and later chapters.

An important property of the wavefunction is its normalization, and we have yet to normalize the radial coulomb radial functions. Following the approach of Merzbacher, we can find an approximate WKB radial wavefunction, good in the classically allowed region, given by6... 

Equation (2.2) is at the center of spectroscopy and photodissociation. It applies equally to bound-bound, bound-free, and free-free transitions. Although almost every textbook on quantum mechanics contains the derivation of (2.2) (see, for example, Merzbacher 1970 ch.l8 Loisell 1973 ch.5 Cohen-Tannoudji, Diu, and Laloe 1977 ch.XIII Loudon...
