Synthesis of manninotriose and a higher oligosaccharide,33 by trans-galactosylase action of yeast melibiase on melibiose, has already been noted in a preceding paragraph. 

The enzymic synthesis of manninotriose from melibiose is mentioned in Section II-4. 

When he was back there, his condition improved steadily—to such an extent, indeed, that he was able to take over personal direction of the remaining reconstruction work. Zempl n also managed to resume his scientific work on the synthesis of derivatives of allolactose and melibiose, in cooperation with Rezso Bognar, and the synthesis of acaciin, with the assistance of Laszld Mester and Andreas Messmer. 

Melibiose was similarly obtained through condensation with tetraacetyl-D-galactopyranosyl bromide in quinoline. This synthesis established the identity of the sugar with 6-(a-D-galactopyranosyl)-D-gluco-pyranose (XXVI), both structurally and configurationally. 

Another derepressive carbon source is melibiose, which was used in studies of mutants capable of achieving various levels of cytochrome c [37,39]. It was found that mutants low in cytochrome c are particularly sensitive with respect to glucose repression of cytochrome a. Diminished cytochrome a synthesis can, therefore, be a secondary effect of other cytochrome deficiences [37,39].
