Colorless and transparent organic aerogels can be made from the aqueous polycondensation of melamine (2,4,6-triamino-s-triazine) with formaldehyde [13]. Melamine is a hexafunctional monomer capable of reacting at each of the amine hydrogens. Under basic conditions formaldehyde adds to the positions just mentioned to form hydroxymethyl (-CH2OH) groups. In the second part of the polymerization the solution is acidified to promote condensation of these intermediate species, leading to gel formation.
