Meisner effect

Superconductivity provides an illustration of the Higgs mechanism. It is the property of materials that show no electrical resistance, usually at low temperatures. Such materials are capable to carry persistent currents. These currents effectively screen out magnetic flux, which is therefore zero in a superconductor (the Meisner effect). Another way of describing the Meisner effect is to say that the photons are effectively massive, as in the Higgs phenomenon. These conclusions can be shown to follow from the Lagrangian (46). In this instance it is sufficient to consider a static situation, i.e. d4 = 0, etc, leading to the Lagrangian... [Pg.173]

Just as superconductors expell magnetic fields curl A (Meisner effect [24]) smectics expell bend and twist. The bend and twist moduli K2 and should therefore diverge upon approaching the smectic state from the nematic. [Pg.320]

Studies continue on the effects of a polymer host matrix on the excited-state properties of guest molecules. For example, the lifetime of excited singlet-state species may be greatly prolonged through restrictions of molecular motions (Gusten and Meisner, inter alia). Accurate information on the blend miscibility of polymers is provided by studies of excimer emission (Mikes et al.), and George et al. claim that the service life of many polymers can be predicted from their luminescence properties see also Martin. [Pg.624]

With U2PtC2, a light weight heavy fermion, we can study the limits of our methods. The material has a relatively small y value of only 75mJ/molU-atomK which leads us to suspect that the effective masses are only in the tens of m. It is also a superconductor with Tc of 1.47 K (Meisner et al. 1984) which puts it between the standard heavy fermions such as UBei3 or UPts and the more normal U-based compound UgFe (Thompson and Meisner 1985). [Pg.346]
