Full details of this work were pubHshed (6) and the processes, or variants of them, were introduced in a number of other countries. In the United States, the pharmaceutical industry continued to provide manufacturing sites, treating plasma fractionation as a normal commercial activity. In many other countries processing was undertaken by the Red Cross or blood transfusion services that emerged following Wodd War II. In these organisations plasma fractionation was part of a larger operation to provide whole blood, blood components, and speciaUst medical services on a national basis. These different approaches resulted in the development of two distinct sectors in the plasma fractionation industry ie, a commercial or for-profit sector based on paid donors and a noncommercial or not-for-profit sector based on unpaid donors. [Pg.526]

Medical Programs. Large chemical plants have at least one hill-time physician who is at the plant five days a week and on call at all other times. Smaller plants either have part-time physicians or take injured employees to a nearby hospital or clinic by arrangement with the company compensation-insurance carrier. When part-time physicians or outside medical services are used, there is Httle opportunity for medical personnel to become familiar with plant operations or to assist in improving the health aspects of plant work. Therefore, it is essential that chemical-ha2ards manuals and procedures, which highlight symptoms and methods of treatment, be developed. A hill-time industrial physician should devote a substantial amount of time to becoming familiar with the plant, its processes, and the materials employed. Such education enables the physician to be better prepared to treat injuries and illnesses and to advise on preventive measures. [Pg.101]

Unlike most anxiety disorders, panic disorder leads to a high utilization of general medical services, reflecting the frequency, severity and alarming nature of physical symptoms such as palpitations, gastrointestinal distress, respiratory problems and headaches (Zaubler and Katon, 1998). This can result in extensive investigations and sometimes inappropriate but expensive medications. [Pg.62]

The likelihood of a successful resuscitation outcome is enhanced if each of four critical elements in the chain of survival is implemented promptly (1) early recognition of the emergency and activation of emergency medical services (2) early bystander basic life support and CPR (3) early delivery of a shock with a defibrillator and (4) early ACLS followed by resuscitation care delivered by healthcare professionals. [Pg.88]

What are the ethical, legal, social, and scientific implications of pharmacogenomics Given the current disparities and the role—however illegitimate—of skin color and ethnicity in the distribution of medical services, how might new approaches to therapy affect socially defined groups of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent These questions are complex individually, and they become more so when intersected. [Pg.265]
