Medical schools and training

Many characteristics of primary care are equally true of psychiatry. Primary care doctors and psychiatrists both go to medical school and train in general medicine during their internships. However, after their internships, doctors in different specialties become increasingly focused on their particular area of expertise. 

There are several steps involved in becoming a physician - undergraduate school, medical school, and training. 

Costly. Although the dividends are high, becoming a physician requires an enormous investment of money and time. According to a 2006 report published by the AAMC, the median debt for a public medical school graduate is now almost 120,000, and that for private school graduates is over 150,000. Furthermore, most physicians spend at least seven years in medical school and training.
