4 Measures to improve the fill properties after disposal 

There are several methods available to improve the properties of soft clay or silt. These include  

ripening of the clay (dewatering) which is only feasible above the waterline  

use of additives (for instance dry powder clay, quicklime, cement, fly-ash)  

accelerating the consolidation process of the soft clay or silt by means of vertical drains or drainage layers.
