After the war he continued to speak out on political issues, such as his open letter to the United Nations urging the formation of a world government, and his frequent condemnations in the press of Senator Joseph McCarthy s activities. After the death of Chaim Weizmann, the first president of Israel, Einstein was invited but declined to be his successor.

For many decades, but especially since the days of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the insinuation of homosexuality about one s adversaries has become an accepted strategy in American political life. Ordinarily, people labeled as deviant have in fact broken some rule (legal, religious, or social)—for example, the hippies, or homosexuals frequently, however, they have violated no such rules and are categorized as deviants only because respected authorities cast them in such a role—for example, innocent citizens labeled as Communists by Senator Joseph McCarthy, or prominent persons, like Senator Barry Goldwater, labeled as mentally ill by psychiatrists. Becker correctly emphasizes that some people may be labeled deviant who in fact have not broken a rule. . . Deviance is not a quality that lies in behavior itself, but in the interaction between the person who commits an act and those who respond to it. ... 

One legacy of the McCarthy years was the public silence on these subjects throughout the 1950S and official reticence that lasted well into the 1960s.
