The senior author. Dr, Warren L. McCabe, died in August 1982. This book is dedicated to his memory. 

During the past century a number of well-known researchers performed their doctoral thesis independently or in absentia, and submitted it to a particular school for approval. This is for example the case of Warren McCabe who performed his doctoral work (1928) mostly at MIT but under the nominal direction of Eugene Leslie of Ae University of Michigan. Rutherford Aris did his Sc.D. work at the University of Minnesota but submitted to the University of London (1960). No professor is mentioned as an "academic advisor." A few years ago, Aris asked to be linked to Neal Amundson "as his student," a request that is only natural, since Amundson was his mentor in his early years at Minnesota.
