The above method gives beads of gel-type polymer matrix. Porous beads can be made by incorporating a component (for example, styrene homopolymer) that is soluble in the monomer mixture. After polymerization this component is removed from the matrix with, for example, toluene, thus leaving pores within the structure in the final product. [Pg.641]

The range of potential components that could be fabricated from porous matrix ceramic composites may be limited because of the poor mechanical properties of the porous matrix. Porous matrices generally yield composites with low compressive and interlaminar properties, making it difficult to design structures capable of carrying out-of-plane loads. Furthermore, it is difficult to attach porous matrix composites to neighboring structures. Three-dimensional fiber arehiteetures rather than two-dimensional laminate structures will probably be required for the components made from a porous matrix eeramie composite. [Pg.80]

In general, tests have tended to concentrate attention on the ability of a flux model to interpolate through the intermediate pressure range between Knudsen diffusion control and bulk diffusion control. What is also important, but seldom known at present, is whether a model predicts a composition dependence consistent with experiment for the matrix elements in equation (10.2). In multicomponent mixtures an enormous amount of experimental work would be needed to investigate this thoroughly, but it should be possible to supplement a systematic investigation of a flux model applied to binary systems with some limited experiments on particular multicomponent mixtures, as in the work of Hesse and Koder, and Remick and Geankoplia. Interpretation of such tests would be simplest and most direct if they were to be carried out with only small differences in composition between the two sides of the porous medium. Diffusion would then occur in a system of essentially uniform composition, so that flux measurements would provide values for the matrix elements in (10.2) at well-defined compositions. [Pg.101]

Cera.micA.bla.tors, Several types of subliming or melting ceramic ablators have been used or considered for use in dielectric appHcations particularly with quartz or boron nitride [10043-11 -5] fiber reinforcements to form a nonconductive char. Fused siHca is available in both nonporous (optically transparent) and porous (sHp cast) forms. Ford Aerospace manufactures a 3D siHca-fiber-reinforced composite densified with coUoidal siHca (37). The material, designated AS-3DX, demonstrates improved mechanical toughness compared to monolithic ceramics. Other dielectric ceramic composites have been used with performance improvements over monolithic ceramics (see COMPOSITE MATERIALS, CERAMIC MATRIX). [Pg.5]

Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell. Concentrated phosphoric acid is used for the electrolyte ia PAFC, which operates at 150 to 220°C. At lower temperatures, phosphoric acid is a poor ionic conductor (see Phosphoric acid and the phosphates), and CO poisoning of the Pt electrocatalyst ia the anode becomes more severe when steam-reformed hydrocarbons (qv) are used as the hydrogen-rich fuel. The relative stabiUty of concentrated phosphoric acid is high compared to other common inorganic acids consequentiy, the PAFC is capable of operating at elevated temperatures. In addition, the use of concentrated (- 100%) acid minimizes the water-vapor pressure so water management ia the cell is not difficult. The porous matrix used to retain the acid is usually sihcon carbide SiC, and the electrocatalyst ia both the anode and cathode is mainly Pt. [Pg.579]

The process is used for ferrous P/M stmctural parts that have densities of at least 7.4 g/cm and mechanical properties superior than those of parts that have been only compacted and sintered. Depending on the appHcation, the porous matrix may be infiltrated only partially or almost completely. Copper-base alloy infiltrants have been developed to minimise erosion of the iron matrix. [Pg.187]
