More unusual still is Philip Massinger s Believe as You List (1631), a tragedy set in the ancient world in which the returned king Antiochus is persecuted by the Roman Empire, in the person of Titus Flaminius. Rather than dying either on or off stage, Antiochus ends the play alive but bound for a Roman prison in which he knows that he will probably die in the play s final lines he declares,... 

Believe as You List, in The Plays and Poems of Philip Massinger, ed. Philip Edwards and Colin Gibson, Vol. 3 (Oxford Clarendon Press, 1976), 5.2.237-43. This play survives only in what seems to have been a playhouse manuscript, and Edwards and Gibson s edition preserves corrected words and letters in square brackets in addition to modernising the spelling, I have deleted these, giving only the final text. Accessibility of texts was one reason why the eighteenth century was almost entirely dominated by the dramatists - Shakespeare, Jonson, and Beaumont and Fletcher (that is, plays written individually and in collaboration by Beaumont, Fletcher, Field, Massinger and others) - who existed in substantial volumes rather than perishable, unbound quartos.
