In aqueous solution, manganous salts are oxidised to manganese dioxide,6 and if silver nitrate is present as catalyst, to permanganate 0 the latter change constitutes Marshall s reaction. Chromium solutions in a similar manner give rise to chromate,7 even without a catalyst. Ferrous and cerous salts are converted into ferric and ceric salts, respectively, and phosphites are oxidised to phosphates. 

The oxidative radical ring opening of cyclopropanols 191 mediated by Mn(pic)3 was developed by Narasaka and coworkers. Their efforts culminated recently in the development of a silver-catalyzed method (see Part 3, Sect. 6.2). Kulinkovich et al. based a manganese-catalyzed process on it. Manganese abietate 192 (1—1.5 mol%) was used as the catalyst and oxygen as the terminal oxidant (Fig. 54) [289]. 

Although the decomposition of ozone to dioxygen is a thermodynamically favoured process,126 it is thermally stable up to 523 K and catalysts are needed to decompose it at ambient temperature in ventilation systems, in the presence of water vapour and at high space velocity. A limited number of catalysts have been evaluated and active components are mainly metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, and metal oxides including those of manganese, cobalt, copper, iron, nickel and silver. Supports that have been used include 7-alumina, silica, zirconia, titania and activated carbon.125,170...
