Manganese -nitrate.hexahydrate

Manganese(II) nitrate-silver nitrate reagent. Dissolve 2 87 g manganese(II) nitrate hexahydrate, Mn(N03)2.6H20, in 40 ml water. Add a solution of 3-55 g silver nitrate, AgN03, in 40 ml water and dilute the mixture to 100 ml. Neutralize the solution with 2m sodium hydroxide until a black precipitate is starting to form. Filter and keep the solution in a dark bottle. 

Diacetylbenzene from 4-ethylacetophenone Magnesium nitrate hexahydrate (30 g) is dissolved in water (250 ml), and 4-ethylacetophenone (15 g) is added. The mixture is warmed to 50° and powdered potassium permanganate (16 g) is added in small portions with rapid stirring. The temperature rises to 70°. Oxidation is complete in 2h, the mixture is then allowed to cool and the manganese dioxide formed is filtered off and washed with ether. The aqueous filtrate is also shaken with ether. The combined ether extracts are dried over calcium chloride, filtered, and evaporated, whereupon /7-diacetylbenzene separates (13.8 g, 84% m.p. 114°).

Dissolve the sample as for zirconium. Add 2 ml hydrogen peroxide (30 %) and 2 ml hydrogen fluoride (50 %). Add the solution onto the column and elute as for zirconium, collecting the fraction of the eluate between 80 and 280 ml. Precipitate yttrium fluoride at 70-80 C and stir for one hour. Filter off on a membrane filter. Dissolve 50 mg vanadium(III) oxide, 50 mg manganese(II) chloride dihydrate and 50 mg cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate in the filtrate and add dropwise 6 ml 0.5 M barium nitrate while stirring. Filter off the precipitate, wash with ethanol and dry at 80°C.
