Of the manganese halides only the first band of IMn(CO)5 is split into two spin—orbit components. 

Reactions of Mns have also been reported. The analysis of the observed emissions served essentially to unravel the complex spectroscopy of the manganese halides rather than investigating the dynamics of the corresponding reactions. 

We developed an alternative synthetic route for the direct formation of non-functionalized and functionalized benzylic manganese halides from highly reactive manganese and benzylic halides [13].

Highly reactive manganese was prepared by the reduction of anhydrous manganese halides (chloride, bromide, and iodide) with lithium using naphthalene as an electron carrier. In a typical preparation, lithium (9.68 mmol), naphthalene (1.48 mmol), and anhydrous manganese chloride (4.71 mmol) were stirred in freshly distilled THE (15 ml) for 1-3 h at rt. A black slurry was obtained and ready for use. (Note The number of millimoles of Mn cited in here refers to the theoretical amount possible, based on the original amount of anhydrous manganese halide.)... 

Benzyl manganese halides were shown not to react with starting benzyl halides via an Sn2 route.
