Manganese energy levels

The spectrum of [MnBr(Meetren)]Br (8) (Fig. 26) shows very weak bands in the region 15—32 kK (e 0.4—1.2) which are to be attributed to spin-forbidden transitions from the ground sextet state to the first quartet levels. Dr. j0rgensen kindly provided to the author information about the energy levels of manganese(II) in trigonal bipyramidal chromophores. [Pg.78]

A. Mn(II) EPR. The five unpaired 3d electrons and the relatively long electron spin relaxation time of the divalent manganese ion result in readily observable EPR spectra for Mn2+ solutions at room temperature. The Mn2+ (S = 5/2) ion exhibits six possible spin-energy levels when placed in an external magnetic field. These six levels correspond to the six values of the electron spin quantum number, Ms, which has the values 5/2, 3/2, 1/2, -1/2, -3/2 and -5/2. The manganese nucleus has a nuclear spin quantum number of 5/2, which splits each electronic fine structure transition into six components. Under these conditions the selection rules for allowed EPR transitions are AMS = + 1, Amj = 0 (where Ms and mj are the electron and nuclear spin quantum numbers) resulting in 30 allowed transitions. The spin Hamiltonian describing such a system is... [Pg.50]

Neutron Activation Analysis. Magnesium-26 has a small cross section of 0.03 b. The product of irradiation with thermal neutrons is Mg (1 9.5m). As shown in Table 1, several elements commonly present in biological materials give rise to radioactive nuclides with radiations at energy levels close to those characteristic of Mg. Neutron activation was used in the first trials of Mg as an in vivo tracer when measurements were made with a well-type Nal-Tl crystal detector (14,21). Under these conditions the presence of sodium, altuninum and manganese in the samples interfered in the accurate detection of Mg, but could be reduced or eliminated by sample purification. [Pg.79]

We use the symbol ic to distinguish an orbital electron from a beta particle, symbol °p.) The orbital vacancy is quickly filled by an electron that moves down from a higher energy level, and that energy difference appears as an x-ray photon. Radioactive iron forms stable manganese through electron capture ... [Pg.766]

Cooperations that move electrons need electron-moving metals available in the early Earth s oceans. The list of possibilities is short. Of the abundant metals, only iron, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, and copper can exist in two or more states at energy levels useful to life, which is necessary for these redox reactions. Iron... [Pg.116]
