Manganese catalysis addition with

Acylation reactions can also be greatly improved in this way, with t-alkyl- or sec-alkyl-manganese reagents reacting with acid chlorides in excellent yields [123]. The related addition-elimination to 3-ethoxy-2-cyclohexenone is also improved, resulting after acidic aqueous workup in 3-methyl-2-cyclohexenone [125]. The perilla-ketone 126 was prepared in an improved yield using copper(I) catalysis (Scheme 2.58) [129]. [Pg.70]

Metal-ion catalysis has been extensively reviewed (Martell, 1968 Bender, 1971). It appears that metal ions will not affect ester hydrolysis reactions unless there is a second co-ordination site in the molecule in addition to the carbonyl group. Hence, hydrolysis of the usual types of esters is not catadysed by metal ions, but hydrolysis of amino-acid esters is subject to catalysis, presumably by polarization of the carbonyl group (KroU, 1952). Cobalt (II), copper (II), and manganese (II) ions promote hydrolysis of glycine ethyl ester at pH 7-3-7-9 and 25°, conditions under which it is otherwise quite stable (Kroll, 1952). The rate constants have maximum values when the ratio of metal ion to ester concentration is unity. Consequently, the most active species is a 1 1 complex. The rate constant increases with the ability of the metal ion to complex with 2unines. The scheme of equation (30) was postulated. The rate of hydrolysis of glycine ethyl... [Pg.66]

A titanium complex derived from chiral /V-arencsulfonyl-2-amino-1 -indanol [20], a cationic chiral iron complex [21], and a chiral oxo(salen)manganese(V) complex [22] have been developed for the asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction of oc,P-unsaturated aldehydes with high asymmetric induction (Eq. 8A.11). In addition, a stable, chiral diaquo titanocene complex is utilized for the enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and a series of a.P Unsaturated aldehydes at low temperature, where catalysis occurs at the metal center rather than through activation of the dienophile by protonation. The high endo/exo selectivity is observed for a-substituted aldehydes, but the asymmetric induction is only moderate [23] (Eq. 8A. 12). [Pg.471]

Miscellaneous Reactions. In addition to the key reactions above, DDQ has been used for the oxidative removal of chromium, iron, and manganese from their complexes with arenes and for the oxidative formation of imidazoles and thiadia-zoles from acyclic precursors. Catal)ftic amounts of DDQ also offer a mild method for the oxidative regeneration of carbonyl compounds from acetals, which contrasts with their formation from diazo compounds on treatment with DDQ and methanol in nonpolar solvents. DDQ also provides effective catalysis for the tetrahydropyranylation of alcohols. Furthermore, the oxidation of chiral esters or amides of arylacetic acid by DDQ in acetic acid provides a mild procedure for the synthesis of chiral a-acetoxy derivatives, although the diastereoselectivity achieved so far is only 65-67%. ... [Pg.155]
