Maleated polyolefin adhesion

Maleated polyolefin adhesion promoters are available from Eastman Chemical (Epolene) [35] and from DuPont (Fusabond) [36]. 

In 2003 Dow introduced three classes of compatibiliser, i.e., maleated polyolefins, ethylene-vinyl acetate and ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymers, all imder the Amplify name. They were intended to improve the impact and viscosity characteristics of engineering thermoplastics and polyolefins for use in domestic appliance and automotive components, as well as for coatings and adhesives. 

We have previously discussed recycled polymer blends in Section 5.11 and 6.7. We noted that binary (or indeed ternary) blends involving polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamides, etc., have poor mechanical properties because of a lack of adhesion between the components (Section 5.11). We indicated in Section 6.7 that introducing compatibiHzing agents such as styrene-hydrogenated butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer and maleated polyolefins can enhance the mechanical properties. However, this in itself is not enough. 

Extrusion-grafted functionalized polyolefin-based polymers (such as Exxon s Exxelor) - maleated or aminated - offer better polymer/flller adhesion as well as impact improvement in engineering polymers and compatibilization in blends and alloys. They function as impact modifiers, compatibilizers and adhesion...
