The structure of a typical unsaturated polymeric acid anhydride surface modifier based on maleanised polybutadiene (MPBD) is shown in Figure 4.5 together with its postulated mode of action. The anhydride groups are believed to lead to reaction with the filler surface, probably by salt formation, while the residual unsaturation is available for participation in various curing or crosslinking processes.
