And so, as you can see from the Contents list, the chapters are arranged in groups, with a group of chapters to describe each of the four classes of materials. In each group we first introduce the major families of materials that go to make up each materials class. We then outline the main microstructural features of the class, and show how to process or treat them to get the structures (really, in the end, the properties) that we want. Each group of chapters is illustrated by Case Studies designed to help you... 

In the preceding sections, our discussion has been limited to softer grade elastomer-plastic vulcanizates. Commercial interest, however, also centers on another major family of polymer blends, semi-rigid impact resistant polyolefins. There is not enough space here to give a detailed classification, but only to delineate the major families from which resins for industrial coatings may be selected. Resins may be divided into two groups according to their modes of film formation which may or may not involve a chemical reaction. In the first, the components must react together to form a crosslinked structure which may require heat, radiation or catalysis to effect the reaction. The bulk of resins used in industrial finishes are of this type. They are commonly referred to as chemically convertible or, simply, convertible. 

We will explore the two major families of chemometric quantitative calibration techniques that are most commonly employed the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) techniques, and the Factor-Based Techniques. Within each family, we will review the various methods commonly employed, learn how to develop and test calibrations, and how to use the calibrations to estimate, or predict, the properties of unknown samples. We will consider the advantages and limitations of each method as well as some of the tricks and pitfalls associated with their use. While our emphasis will be on quantitative analysis, we will also touch on how these techniques are used for qualitative analysis, classification, and discriminative analysis. 

About 78 human genes encoding a variety of K+ channels and auxiliary subunits have been identified (Fig. 1 Table 1). While the K+ channels are diverse, they share with a unique conducting pore highly selective for K+ ions. TheK+ channels ar e tetramers composed of four a subunits that form the conducting pore. On the basis of primary amino acid sequence of a subunit, K+ channels can be classified into three major families (Fig. 2).

An alternative to most of these mechanisms is the existence of efficient efflux systems, so that toxic concentrations of the drug are not achieved. There are three major families of proton-dependent multidrug efflux systems (1) the major facilitator superfamily, (2) the small multidrug resistance family, and (3) the resistance/nodulation/cell division family (Paulsen et al. 1996). It should be emphasized that several of these systems are involved not with antibiotic efflux but with, for example, acriflavine, chlorhexidine, and crystal violet. An attempt is made only to outline a few salient features of the resistance/nodulation/cell division family that mediates antibiotic efflux, and these are given in Table 3.3 (Nikaido 1996). They consist of a transporter, a linker, and an outer membrane channel. 

Chlorpromazine is technically described as a phenothiazine, as are thioridazine and fluphenazine. Together with their structural analogues the thioxanthenes (e.g., clopenthixol) and the butyrophenones (e.g., haloperidol), the phenothiazines comprise the three major families of typical neuroleptics. They were developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s (Table 11.3). Organic anion transporters can be divided into three major families organic anion transporters (OATs), organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs), and multidrug resistance associated proteins (MRPs) [201]. 

In general, the 10 different forms of adenylyl cyclase can be divided into three major and two minor groups based on their functional attributes as well as on their sequence homology. The three major families are (1) the Ca2+/calmodulin-stimulated isoforms, which include AC1, AC3, and AC8 certain of these enzymes are inhibited by GPt (2) the G[ -stimulated isoforms, which include AC2, AC4, and AC7 and (3) the Ca2+ and Gai inhibited isoforms, which are AC5 and AC6. The other two categories each have a single member (4) AC9, which is the most divergent of the membrane-bound isoforms, is stimulated by G(IS, inhibited by calcineurin (a protein phosphatase), and is insensitive to forskolin (5) sAC, the only soluble isoform, is the most divergent and is most similar to the adenylyl cyclase found in Cyanobacteria.

For simplicity, this unique class of hybrid macromolecules may be divided into four major families shown schematically in Figure 7.1. 

In analogy to other enzyme systems, the superfamily of carboxylesterases has been divided into families and subfamilies based on sequence homology (Table 2.7) [79], The major family, CES 1, all exhibit >60% homology with human carboxylesterase HU 1. This family is divided into subfamilies, namely CES 1A, IB, and 1C. As shown in Table 2.7, the enzyme CES 1A1 includes the major forms of human carboxylesterases (>99.5% homology). 

The market shares for the major families of plastics are estimated in Table 2.3 for industrialized countries however, other figures can be found in other sources according to the applications taken into account and the areas considered.
