Macromolecular products will normally be incompatible with their monomeric components and will separate out as new phases. Polymerization and what amounts to crystal growth then may continue together. As soon as part of the system becomes more or less rigidly localized the possibility that diffusion effects take control of the rate enters. [Pg.439]

In conclusion, the importance of long-range interactions for the chemist is emphasized from crystal growth [7] to macromolecular structure [32]. Therefore, an extension of the presented DFT calculations to other systems and especially those with Si---0 interactions, which differ even more in their effective nuclear charges, will definitely stimulate progress in the polysiloxane and silicate world. [Pg.55]

Twin crystals based on the lattice of the repeating unit are also common in the growth of macromolecular crystals, as shown, for example, in the poly(oxyethylene) crystal of Fig. 5.55. It grew out of a small droplet of a melt. The multiple twin has its chain axis tilted to the a-axis by 126°, so that the axis shown in the figure is the... [Pg.496]

We have reported that the polymer complex between PEG and PMAA is much more stable than that formed from PEG and PAA (for example, the stability constants of PEG(MW 3000)-PMAA and PEG-PAA arc 250 and 9 1/mol, respectively, at 30 °C cf. Table 2, Sect. 3.4). It was also found that the fluorescence intensity of PEG-ant increases more than 10 times by the addition of PMAA due to the complex formation, in water In contrast, no fluorescence increase was observed by the addition of PAA. Since an increase in fluorescence intensity can be associated with binding or fixing of anthracene chromophores in the hydrophobic domains of the complexes, the cooperative complexation of the macromolecular chains is adequately considered to promote the nucleation of the crystal growth. [Pg.25]
