Low expl

As these devices are used for igniting and not for detonating low expls like BkPdr, their correct names should be " igniters "... [Pg.734]

Low Explosive (LE). An expl which when used in its normal manner deflagrates or burns rather than detonates that is, the rate of advance of the reaction zone into the unreacted material is less than the vel of sound in the unreacted material. Low expls include proplnts, certain primer mixts, BlkPdr, photoflash pdrs and delay compns.. Whether an expl reacts as a HE or LE depends on the manner in which it is initiated and confined. For example, a double base propint when initiated in the usual manner is a LE. However, this material can be made to deton if the proplnt is initiated by an intense shock. Conversely, a HE like TNT, under certain conditions, can be ignited by flame and will burn without detonating Ref OrdTechTerm (1962), 181-R... [Pg.616]

Vortices, Explosive Powered. During WWII in Ger, a Dr Zippermeyer, working at the Speer Ministry s Research Establishment near Lofer, attempted to duplicate in miniature the effects of tornadoes using expl powered vortices. Although man-made vortices had heretofore been produced using compressed air, Zippermeyer proposed to power the vortex in an entirely new way. He proposed to shoot powdered coal in a projectile. In the center of the mass of powdered coal, he placed a charge of low expl, so that, upon initiation, the coal dust would have a forward component of velocity due to the motion of translation of the projectile and a lateral... [Pg.295]

Squib. A small expl device, similar in appearance to a Detonator (qv), but loaded with low expl, so that its output is primarily heat (flash). Usually electrically initiated, and provided to initiate action of pyrotechnic devices and rocket proplnts... [Pg.433]
