Liver enzymes gamma-glutamyl transferase

Hepatic Effects. A study that measured levels of several liver enzymes (alanine amino transferase, aspartate amino transferase, gamma glutamyl transferase, and alkaline phosphatase) found no significant differences between workers exposed to silver and insoluble silver compounds and those with no history of silver exposure (Pifer et al. 1989).

Severe overdosage of sodium aurothiopropanol sulfonate (1.1 g daily for 13 days) caused jaundice and skin eruptions. Liver biopsies showed modest centrilobular necrosis and significant bile stasis. Serum hepatic enzyme activities were increased. The patient was treated with dimercaprol and recovered after 2 months, although alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl-transferase activities remained high for 6 months. 

Gamma-glutamyl transferase. This enzyme is located in cell plasma membranes of several tissues, with the highest levels present in liver. Alcohol and other toxic compounds that impair liver cells result in a major increase in the activity of this enzyme in serum. Therefore, it is a good marker of injury to the liver and a diagnostic marker for monitoring the abstinence of alcoholic patients during withdrawal therapy. 

Other Enzymes Involved In Mercapturlc Acid Btosynthesls. These enzymes have not been as extensively studied m fish as the GSH-S-transferases. Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase activity has been demonstrated In kidney and Intestinal caeca but not liver of the rainbow trout ( ), and In kidney, but not liver, red blood cells, brain or... 

Cocoa powder exerted anticancer properties in in vivo studies. Amin et al. [50] indicated that cocoa liquor extract lowered the activity of tumor marker enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione reductase activities) in plasma and/or liver of hepatocarcinogenic male Sprague-Dawley rats, which were induced with diethylnitrosamine and 2-acetylaminofluorene.
