Unlike plasma membranes, a substantial amount of free fatty acid (>19%) is found in the stratum comeum bilayer. Moreover, the fatty acid acyl chains, whether free or esterified to other lipids, tend to be longer and much more saturated than their counterparts in the plasma membrane phospholipids [13], For example, Lampe et al. [10] have found that palmitic (Ci6 o), stearic (Cig o), and oleic acid (Ci i) comprises almost 80% of the free fatty adds. Moreover, almost 50% of the stratum comeum sterols and ceramides are acylated with oleic and lignoceric acid (C24 o), respectively [10]. Most investigators believe the unsaturated fatty acids play an important role in skin barrier function [14]. [Pg.439]
