Light-induced sterilization

As a further application, the deposition of Ti02 on tHes for light-induced sterilization purposes has been suggested [118]. In addition, it has been shown that illumination of Ti02 powder can lead to the killing of T-24 human bladder cancer... [Pg.429]

UV-C technology is widely used as an alternative to chemical sterilization and microorganism reduction in food products (Lamikanra 2002 Fan and others 2008). Ultraviolet light also induces biological stress in plants and defense mechanisms in plant tissues with the consequent production of phytochemical compounds (Lee and Kader 2000). Phytoalexin accumulation could be accompanied by other inducible defenses such as cell-wall modifications, defense enzymes, and antioxidant activity, which have been reported with health benefits (Gonzalez-Aguilar and others 2007). It is well documented that UV-C irradiation has an effect in secondary metabolism. [Pg.323]

In addition to effects on DOM, UV exposure also impacts the decomposition of POC [120]. Photoproduction of DIC has been observed from the sterilized detritus of several aquatic macrophytes in both air and immersed in water [120]. The highest production rates were observed in water. Although UVR was most effective at inducing detritus decomposition, visible light also played a role. [Pg.150]

Eletromagnetic radiations of different wavelengths, i.e., UV-visible light and x-ray, are known to induce degradation in proteins [147]. Radiation, which is commonly employed for sterilization purpose, can generate free radicals and lead to peptide... [Pg.392]
