Two contributions to this trend are (a) the general decrease in electropositive character resulting from increased effective nuclear charge and (b) ligand field stabilisation energies, which increase the stability of complexes field ligands higher in the spectrochemical series than water in all ions except Mn2+(d5 ) and Zn2 (d10).

In fact, the total s orbital stabilisation energy will change as the geometry chai ges since the 0 term in Eq. 1 contains the inverse of the energy separation between (in this case) s orbital and ligand a (cr) — central atom orbitals. The energies of the latter will change on distortion but this effect will be smaller. 

LFT seems to fade away to be used in a loose qualitative way to describe certain features of d-d spectra or certain aspects of reaction energies. The latter is invariably couched in terms of Ligand Field Stabilisation Energies (LFSEs).
