Lewis and Macdonald

The existence of the isotope H was shown spectroscopically in 1931 (Urey, Brickwedde and Murphy), and the preparation of nearly pure DjjO was achieved two years later (Lewis and Macdonald) by prolonged electrolysis of 0.5A NaOH with nickel electrodes. Three factors favour the liberation of Hg at the cathode rather than Dg ... 

Lithium occurs as Li (7.3%) and Li (92.7%) with one isotope nearly 17% greater in mass than the other, and a difference in chemical behaviour has been detected. Lewis and MacDonald (1936), by allowing drops of lithium amalgam to fall through a methanefl solution of lithium chloride, showed that an equilibrium is established ...
