The following is from the introduction to Eliphas Levi s book, Transcendental Magic, in which he quotes in turn from a 16th-century manuscript. Like many of these quotations offered for contemplation, its language is time-fettered. However, its essential teaching coincides with the siddhis, the powers of the perfected yogi, described by Patanjali. 

Each end of the rod of power Is ornamented with a tree s fruit the almond nut and the pine cone. This, the true wand of practitioners of the Great Work, is internal. It is described by Eliphas Levi in his Sanctum Regnum and shown in the suit of Wands in the tarot designed by Paul Foster Case as having identical crystals (more accurately diamonds), one bright and one dark, on either end of the rod, just as, on the simple...

The artistic writ then proclaimed to the gaped-mouth mob is also functionally very much like that high-minded spiritual mission that had been espoused by most modernist Occultists since Eliphas Levi. Whether the particular spokesman is an Artist or an Occultist, they all proclaim that the real Universe lies beyond ordinary perception, and that only the clairvoyant modern painter can penetrate deceptive surface appearances in order to perceive the superior reality of an invisible, occult vitalism that lurks beneath. In the way that the perennial Gnostic Wisdom was stated by the Futurists in 1910,...
