Lespedeza bicolor

A,A-dimethyltryptamine was isolated (77). A7,Ar-Dim ethyltry ptamine also occurs in the leaves of Lespedeza bicolor vax. japonica (Leguminosae) (78), and in the roots of Mimosa hostilis Benth. (40, 79). The latter plant is also the source of an extract used by the local (Brazilian) Indians in their mysticoreligious ceremonies for its hallucinogenic properties. These rituals have been described by Gongalves de Lima, who recorded the extraction of nigeiine from Mimosa hostilis, but did not identify it as N,N-dimethyltryptamine (79). [Pg.10]

Using TLC on alumina or sihca gel G, Morumoto and Osmo [139] have succeeded in isolating from Lespedeza bicolor var. japonica, a little N,N-dimethyltryptamine and also the new alkaloid l-methoxy-N,N-dimethyl-tryptamine, termed lespedamine . [Pg.447]

The occurrence of A (,iVj-dimethyltryptamine in Lespedeza bicolor var. japonica has been substantiated, and other bases have been isolated. These include iVa-methoxy-iVjiVj-dimethyltryptamine (lespedamine) (III), a base not previously encountered from natural sources, bufotenine, and 5-methoxy-Aj.,iVi-dimethyltryptamine (16,17). It is of interest that the crude plant extracts and iVjiVj-dimethyltryptamine are reported to exhibit uterus-contracting properties (27). [Pg.495]
