Other directors turned to adaptations of classic French writers. Mikhail Romm filmed Maupassant in Boule de Suif (Pyshka, 1934), and there were versions of Balzac s Gobseck and Hugo s Les Miserables. Of course these source texts were partly chosen because they addressed the poverty, exploitation, and class division of nineteenth-century French society, but they also served the paradoxical purpose of taking Soviet audiences, who of course had no possibility of travelling abroad, into a France of the imagination.
