When using the heating and cooling features of IlyperChem ii should he remembered that ii is accomplished through rescalingof the velocities, so if the velocities are zero no tcmperaiurc can occur. This happens, for example, if you start with an exactly opti-mi/ed stni ctii re an d heat from a startm g lem perature Tj of/.ero.or use the restart option when velocities are all zero. [Pg.315]

Je next introduce the basic algorithms and then describe some of the mmy variants upon lem. We then discuss two methods called evolutionary algorithms and simulated anneal-ig, which are generic methods for locating the globally optimal solution. Finally, we discuss jme of the ways in which one might cinalyse the data from a conformational malysis in rder to identify a representative set of conformations. [Pg.474]

Limiting Equations If the height of a foam-fraciionation column is increased sufficiently, a concentration pinch will develop between the counterflowing interstitial streams (Brunner and Lem-lich, loc. cit.). For an enricher, the separation attained will then approach the predictions of Eq. (22-51) and, interestingly enough, Eq. (22-46). [Pg.2020]

The effective surface viscosity is best found by experiment with the system in question, followed by back calculation through Eq. (22-55). From the precursors to Eq. (22-55), such experiments have yielded values of [L, on the order of (dyn-s)/cm for common surfactants in water at room temperature, which agrees with independent measurements [Lemhch, Chem. Eng. ScL, 23, 932 (1968) and Shih and Lem-lich. Am. Inst. Chem. Eng. J., 13, 751 (1967)]. However, the expected high [L, for aqueous solutions of such sldn-forming substances as saponin and albumin was not attained, perhaps because of their non-newtonian surface behavior [Shih and Lemhch, Ind. Eng. Chem. Fun-dam., 10, 254 (1971) andjashnani and Lemlich, y. Colloid Inteiface ScL, 46, 13(1974)]. [Pg.2021]

Foam can also be broken with a rotating perforated basket [Lem-lich, Principles of Foam Fractionation, in Periy (ed.), Progre.ss in Separation and Purification, vol. 1, Interscience, New York, 1968, chap. 1]. If the foamate is aqueous (as it usually is), the operation can be improved by discharging onto Teflon instead of glass [Haas and Johnson, Am. In.st. Chem. Fng. J., II, 319 (1965)]. A turbine can be used to break foam [Ng, Mueller, and Walden, Can. J. Chem. Fng., 55, 439 (1977)]. Foam which is not overly stable has been broken by running foamate onto it [Brunner and Stephan, Ind. Fng. Chem., 57(5), 40 (1965)]. Foam can also be broken by sound or ultrasound, a rotating disk, and other means [Ohkawa, Sakagama, Sakai, Futai, and Takahara,y. Ferment. Technol, 56,428, 532 (1978)]. [Pg.2021]

The confusion matrix (NSAC-60) is a method that identifies potential operator errors lemming from incorrect diagnosis of an event. It can be used to identify the potential for an operator to conclude that a small LOCA has occurred, when it is actually a steam line break. This provides a method for identifying a wrong operator response to an off-normal plant condition. It is particularly useful in Step 5 of the. SHARP procedures, Documentation requirements are presented in Table 4.5-2. [Pg.176]

A reduced scale of the model requires an increased velocity level in the experiments to obtain the correct Reynolds number if Re < Re for the prob lem considered, but the experiment can be carried out at any velocity if Re > RCj.. The influence of the turbulence level is shown in Fig. 12.40. A velocity u is measured at a location in front of the opening and divided by the exhaust flow rate in order to obtain a normalized velocity. The figure show s that the normalized velocity is constant for Reynolds numbers larger than 10 000, which means that the flow around the measuring point has a fully developed turbulent structure at that velocity level. The flow may be described as a potential flow with a normalized velocity independent of the exhaust flow rate at large distances from the exhaust opening— and far away from surfaces. [Pg.1192]

Jaborandi leaves were first used in medieine in 1874 by Dr-. Coutinho, of Pemambueo, by whom the drug was sent to Europe. Holmes showed that up to 1893 jaborandi was obtained from P. Jaborandi Holmes and not as had been supposed from P. pennatifolius Lem. Since 1896 the plaee of these species has been taken by the leaves of P. microphyllus Stapf. The leaves of P. Selloanus Engler and P. trachylophus Holmes have also appeared on the market from time to time. [Pg.621]

In an indirect bath heat exchanger, the heating medium provides Iil u to an intermediary fluid, which then transfers the heat to the fluid h)cuig heated. An example of this is the common line heater used on many gas well streams to keep the temperature above the hydrate formal ion lem perature. A fire tube heats a water bath, which provides heat to tlie v.all siieam flowing through a coil immersed in the bath. Details pertaining to dcsi jit of indirect bath heaters are presented in Chapter 5. [Pg.48]
