Lederer, Edgar

In 1933, Leopold Ruzicka and M. Pfeiffer in Zurich and W. Treff and H. Werner in Leipzig got closer to the objective in determining the structure of jasmone. Also of great importance for the scent profile is indole, the odour of which resembles that of human faeces. However, at high dilution it develops a powerful floral component with unusually interesting scent properties. In 1962, Edouard Demole and Edgar Lederer achieved the critical isolation and structure determination of a third characteristically scented component of jasmine absolue, namely methyl (Z)-(3R,7R)-jasmonate and methyl (Z)-(3R,7S)-jasmonate (Fig. 3.21). [77] Today we know however that jasmine absolue contains more than 100 further compounds. [Pg.78]

Echinenone and astaxanthin were discovered by the French chemist Edgar Lederer in 1933. Echinenone is the orange pigment of the gonads of sea urchins (from which the name is derived), and astaxanthin is the... [Pg.59]
