2 Isotropic Liquid-Nematic Transition 6.2.1 Landau-De Gennes Equation 

What is known from experiments on this transition  

There is only a small jump of density at transition temperature Tni, about 0.3%. Therefore, the density can approximately be considered constant at both sides of the transition the pressure is also considered constant. 

This asymmetry generates the cubic term, coefficient B must be finite, and the first order transition is expected. 

The tensor form of the order parameter should be taken into account, in the simplest case, the uniaxial one [3,4]
