In contrast to the synthesis of bicyclic azetidinones containing a carboxyl group on the atom adjacent to the lactam nitrogen (see Section 5.12.3.4), few examples are reported in which bicyclic azetidinones without this carboxyl group are prepared from azetidinone precursors. One unique approach, however, utilized a free radical ring closure to obtain 6-oxa-l-azabicyclo[5.2.0]nonan-9-one (116) in modest yield (81TL2689). [Pg.358]

A review of approaches to the design and synthesis of azabicycloalkane amino acids as constrained dipeptide mimetics has been reported. These approaches include 7-membered lactam ring formation by free radical cyclization from a substituted proline precursor <04SL1449>. [Pg.391]

The correct C3 stereoisomer was moved forward to 176 (protection of the tertiary alcohol followed by reduction of the lactam). The silyl ethers were removed, the secondary ether was re-protected, and reaction with samarium iodide accomplished reduction of the a-hydroxy ester to provide 177. Removal of the TBS group and esterification of the alcohol completed the synthesis of reserpine. [Pg.321]
