Laboratory techniques video

The preparation for physical chemistry laboratory is a little harder to judge. Today s students seem less experienced in working with their hands than students of a few decades ago, except in the area of video games. I have used an initial experiment in which the students were required to carry out three simple measurements after assembling simple apparatuses, a technique that I learned from Ed Bair at Indiana University. Close observation of the students as they carry out such an experiment gives some information about their aptitude. This experiment also provided the opportunity to discuss data reduction, error analysis and report writing at the beginning of the course.

This paper will describe laboratory methods used to predict these characteristics. Video techniques have been developed to observe the reaction process in its entirely. Also, methods to measure ranissions of dust and volatiles, glass reaction onset temperature and reaction energy will also be discussed. Results of some of the analyses will be included and discussed. 

At some point in the near future you should watch the video entitled Combustion Analysis in the multimedia activity Practical techniques on the Experimental techniques CD-ROM that accompanies this book. The sequence shows the operation of a laboratory elemental analyser for C, H and N. This activity should take approximately 5 minutes to complete. 

The practical aspects of separation and purification are presented in a series of video sequences that demonstrate the techniques and methods in use in the laboratory.
