L-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tosylate

For PIL concentrations of up to 10 wt%, the diameters of the PIL phases were between 50 nm and 200 nm, as revealed by TEM analysis, and hence, the blends were fully transparent. Notably, the PIL additives did not affect the glass transition temperature of SAN at all, whereas the low-molecular-weight IL l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tosylate used for comparison severely plasticized the matrix polymer. When melt compounding SAN together with SiOa or Ti02 nanoparticles in the presence of PEHO-ClImOTs, the inorganic nanoparticles accumulated in the PIL nanophases, which emphasizes the scope of these micelle-like PILs to be employed in the fabrication of novel compartmentalized materials.
