Key Examples of Oxygenate Reforming Reactions

In order to design efficient and stable reforming catalysts and to select the best operating conditions for hydrogen production, several experimental and theoretical studies have been performed using model compounds which are representative of the major classes of components present in bio-oils. 

Catalytic production of hydrogen from methanol has been studied for the last 30-40 years and decomposition of methanol to CO and H2 (Equation 6.5) has been utilized commercially in the steel industry for decades as a method for providing carbon monoxide for the carbonization of steel. 

CSRM (Equation 6.6) is a highly developed and thoroughly studied process [93-99]  

The CSRM is often operated using a 30% excess steam in the feed stream in order to lower the CO concentrations [93, 96]. 

A wide variety of catalysts have been reported to be active for CSRM. The kinetics and reaction paths depend on the catalytic materials used. The majority of these systems have been copper based.
