7 Ketonucleosides and Nucleosides containing Uronic Acid Components 

The oxidation of isolated hydroxy-groups to carbonyl groups in carbohydrates by the photolysis of pyruvate esters (see Vol. 10, p. 171 Vol. 11, p. 129) has been extended to nucleosides. 5 -0-Tritylthymidine gave the crystalline 3 -oxo-nucleoside in 61 % yield.  

The biosynthesis of the uronic acid component of polyoxins has been studied by means of n.m.r using D-[l- C]glucose as precursor.
