The history of this initiative, from the early stages to the foundation of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft and the inauguration of this society s Chemical Institute, has been well described, especially by J.A. Johnson, who examined very particularly these important events of the history of natural science in Germany in the last hundred years. Duisberg s main part was to find promoters in industry and to convince them to spend considerable amounts of money. In a letter to Fischer he wrote that "It is important to drum together as much money as possible." ...
