Many women who have received silicone-fluid-filled breast implants have claimed to suffer from implant-related diseases, apparently caused by small leakages of the fluid into the body tissue. Successful lawsuits on those grounds in the United States have driven Dow Corning, the principal manufacturer of the implants, to file for bankruptcy protection. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David A. Kessler, however, has reported to a congressional subcommittee that, as of July, 1995, there was no scientific evidence that silicone implants are a significant cause of disease. See M. S. Reisch and R. L. Rawls, Silicone gel breast implants. Chem. Eng. News, December 11, 10-17 (1995). [Pg.62]

These deadlines were not met. In the listing of July 30, 1943,22 delivery of both units is announced for early October . Further, the hourly capacity of each unit is given as = 625 men = 15,000 men per 24 hours. Thus, the total capacity of both shortwave facilities amounted to the clothing of 30,000 persons per day. On August 27, 1943, the construction costs of the stationary facility are given as RM 98,000,54 which translates into approximately DM 1,568,000 today (ca. 870,000). A notice of December 11, 1943,55 stated that the materials and apparatus had already been received. The installation date for SSW is given as January 16, 1944, at the earliest. Work actually began on February 16, 1944. [Pg.322]

During the 3-year period 1976-78, commercial sponsors filed 174 first NME INDs. Of these 40 resulted in an NDA, and the FDA had approved 27 for marketing as of July 1991. During the 1984-86 period, commercial sponsors filed 344 NME INDs. By July 1991,53 of these also resulted in an NDA, and 27 had received FDA marketing approval. All drugs in the 1984-86 cohort have at least 54 months experience following IND submission recorded in the database (the amount of time between December 1986 and July 1991). [Pg.309]

This chapter reviews the literature published during the period July 1988 to December 1989. In keeping with previous practice, some selectivity has been exercised. Also, the chapter includes redox reactions between metallic and non-metallic species, regardless of whether or not the nonmetallic component is coordinated to the metal center during electron transfer. The format is such that reactions have been grouped according to their central or reactive nonmetallic element. Some topics have received scant coverage, particularly if they are dealt with elsewhere in this volume. Thus, oxidative addition/reductive elimination reactions are not within the scope of this section. [Pg.47]
