Journal Bearing Failures

After the last changes in construction one set of windows has been used consecutively for four years, without any failure. The journal bearing has been used for more than five years, and still consists (at the moment of writing, i.e. summer 1968) of the original parts. All measurements quoted in ref. (32, 70, 74, 75, 717) and (171) have been carried out with this unchanged arrangement. [Pg.300]

Phenolic composites reinforced with CF are also used for load-bearing materials. Phenolics have good resistance to seizure and work well with steel or bronze journals when lubricants such as oil or water are used. In these applications, the low thermal conductivity of phenolics is overcome by the presence of CF because the phenolic thermoset usually has a thermal conductivity of approximately 0.35 W/m K, i.e., approximately 1/150 that of steel, which may lead to bearing failure by charring (Kim et al, 2009). [Pg.23]

Failure of journal bearings in practice usually occurred by seizure which was preceded by overheating and the cause was often confused between breakdown of hydrodynamic effects and failure of boundary lubrication. Stanton (4) reported the results of a series of tests by Jakeman in which the temperature of a bearing under test was raised by means of a gas Jet situated within a hollow journal. He reproduced curves which were similar to Stribeck curves excepting that the abscissa was temperature rather than speed. Fig. 2. shows a comparason between castor-oil and two... [Pg.18]

A reviewer should be alert to failure of authors to cite relevant work by other scientists, bearing in mind that complaints that the reviewer s own research was insufficiently cited mav seem self-serving. A reviewer should call to the editor s attention anv substantial similarity between the manuscript under consideration and any published paper or any manuscript submitted concurrently to another journal. [Pg.216]
